Phlebotomy Class Structure
The Phlebotomy certification program at Campus looks like this:
1. Student completes 60 hours of in-classroom training.
2. Completion of the NCPT exam.
3. Hands-on 40 hours of externship in a medical facility.
4. Paperwork completed. National Certified Phlebotomy Technician certificate issued to student.
5. Student can apply for a California CPT I license.
What is Phlebotomy?
Phlebotomy is a procedure in which blood is drawn from a vein with a needle for laboratory testing. This procedure is also sometimes known as venipuncture or a blood draw. The blood that is collected is usually used to diagnose medical conditions. Phlebotomists can also draw a blood sample through skin puncture, like pricking a finger to determine blood sugar levels.
Though phlebotomy is mostly used for laboratory testing, in some cases, the blood is drawn to remove extra red blood cells, abnormally shaped blood cells, or extra iron in the blood. This specific type of phlebotomy is known as therapeutic phlebotomy.
What Does a Phlebotomist Do?
Phlebotomists typically have the following duties:
- Drawing blood samples from patients or blood donors.
- Apply bandages or gauze after blood is drawn.
- Work with medical equipment used in blood drawing: needles, test tubes, and blood vials.
- Label the drawn blood for correct processing. Sending blood to lab for testing.
- Reassure patients before and during blood drawing. Explain procedures to patients. Many people are nervous around or afraid of needles.
- Input patient data into computer database, keeping records up to date.
- Keep work area clean, sterilizing equipment, disposing of sharps correctly.
The main job of phlebotomists is to draw blood to be used for testing. In some diagnostic labs, the patient’s only interaction may be with the phlebotomist, so being able to put the patient at ease is paramount. Being well-organized and accurate is also a necessary skill.

Most phlebotomists work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinical laboratories, nursing homes, blood donation centers and other medical offices.

How Much Can a Phlebotomist Potentially Earn?
According to Career Explorer, in the State of California, a phlebotomist can earn a salary between $31,900 and $60,634 per year. The same report says the hourly salary can range from $15.34 to $29.15 per hour.
On Indeed.com, the average hourly salary of a phlebotomist in California is $21.75, though there are hourly jobs listed ranging from 18.38 to $35.00 an hour.
Salary.com shows the median salary for a phlebotomist in California is $39,211, with the yearly salary ranging from $31,774 to $47,970.
Phlebotomy Training Requirements
California state law requires that all students enrolled in the phlebotomist program complete a 40-80 hour laboratory externship along with the classroom courses. This externship is unpaid but is at no additional cost. The externship program is coordinated by Campus with Sacramento area medical laboratories, clinics or hospitals. This additional training ensures that students understand the practical implications of their coursework.
Phlebotomy Certification Program
The State of California Department of Laboratory and Field Services has approved the phlebotomy technician program at Campus. Upon completion of the program and the required externship, and passing of the certification exam, students are allowed to apply with the State of California to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician, also known as a CPT1. Students have the option of enrolling in the phlebotomy program alone or as an extension of the Campus medical assisting program. By the end of the program, students will be prepared to take the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) exam. This, along with successful program completion, will make the student eligible to receive their state license as a certified phlebotomist. This exam is administered at Campus, formerly MTI College, in Sacramento.

Program Courses
- PH100 - Phlebotomy
- This course focuses on basic infection control, anatomy and medical terminology. Students will learn proper vein selection, patient identification; types of collection equipment, waste disposal, and post puncture care. Students will continue to learn advanced infectious disease control and biohazards. They will also learn the anticoagulation theory, along with knowledge of pre-analytical sources of error in specimen collection, transport, processing, and storage. Also taught are anatomical site selection, patient preparation, risk factors, and appropriate responses to complications that may arise from phlebotomy. In addition, applications of basic concepts of interpersonal relations, stress management, professional behavior and ethics, legal implications of phlebotomy, quality assurance, and legal issues related to blood collection will be covered.
- PH500 - Phlebotomy Externship
- Students will perform phlebotomy collection in a clinical setting that is separate from the college. Students will assist patients of varying ages and health, whose blood is being tested by a clinical laboratory.

California License Examination Pass Rates
A written examination and practical (hands-on) externship are required to become a licensed phlebotomist in California.
In the 2022 calendar year, Campus students achieved a 95% successful pass rate.
The National Center for Competency Testing does not provide institutional pass rates for the written examination on their website. Please contact the college for information on test pass rates.
