- The ability to identify a problem. You might be surprised at just how difficult it can be to find the right problem that needs to be addressed. It is often not enough to find a problem that could be fixed, in other words, because there is often one specific issue that is causing the most trouble. The ability to quickly and accurately identify this is a valued skill in the workplace.
- The ability to propose a solution. Once you find the right problem that needs to be addressed, it is time to find the right solution. This is equally as difficult, and equally as valuable as the ability to identify the problem in the first place.
- The ability to evaluate options. There will often be a few different options that could potentially fix a problem. An employee skilled in solving problems and making decisions will be able to weigh them and pick the most efficient option available.
- The ability to implement solutions. Finally, employees that are truly skilled in problem-solving will be able to successfully implement the solutions that they have uncovered.

Finally, we come to one of the most important skills that you can possess. This is true for nearly every professional position out there, especially if you are in an industry that requires the ability to communicate between team members using a computer or computerized device, including things like tablets or smartphones. The ability to competently operate a computer is a vital skill in today’s business world.
As mentioned briefly above, there is a wide variety of computerized devices with which you might need to be familiar. The specifics of this might vary slightly depending upon the exact job in question; however, it is not a stretch to say that focusing on mastering common software suites and functions using a desktop or laptop computer could effectively make or break your resume.
With the above in mind, it is a good idea to have general knowledge of operating systems. The most common operating system that is widely used in professional environments is Microsoft Windows. If you have completed any kind of education or job training, you are more than likely familiar with an operating system. You don’t need to have impeccable skills that label you an expert in Windows, but being able to operate efficiently is an important skill to have when applying for jobs in today’s competitive environment. In addition to operating systems, applicants should be able to work efficiently with software suites. In many industries, the ability to work productively using the following suites is almost mandatory, even if the skill is not overtly stated in a job description. The Microsoft Office suite is the most popular suite used in business today, and you should consider investing in training courses or classes if you are unfamiliar with it. Having at least some familiarity with the Office suite is advised; however, the following are some of the most important applications on which to focus in business:
