Phlebotomy Certification

MTI College Phlebotomy Student

Expand upon a medical assistant diploma with phlebotomy certification to enhance your medical career

Become a Certified Phlebotomist

The healthcare industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, and Sacramento is no exception. The phlebotomy technician program at MTI College will prepare students for work in a medical lab or other potential healthcare careers.

The MTI College Phlebotomist program can be taken in conjunction with the medical assistant program to expand the student’s medical skills and knowledge and widen their healthcare employment opportunities.

The Phlebotomy program at MTI College is fully approved by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and the American Medical Technologists (AMT). By the end of the program, students will be prepared to take the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) exam. This will make the student eligible to receive their state license as a certified phlebotomist. This exam is administered at MTI College.

It was a really fun experience the whole way through. All of my instructors were full of knowledge. My fellow students were all great. Every class that I took had a purpose. I actually miss coming to school!

Externships available

Gain workplace flexibility

The primary duty of a phlebotomy technician is to draw blood from patients. Blood may be drawn from the finger, another extremity or directly from a vein. Other duties include processing blood samples and documenting work. Phlebotomists work in a range of environments, including private offices, hospitals, and medical laboratories.

Acceptance into the Phlebotomy program is not guaranteed.

Due to the limited number of externship sites available for Sacramento phlebotomy students, and the requirements for acceptance into the program, not all who apply to enter the Phlebotomy program will be accepted. Acceptance will be determined by evaluation of the student’s transcript, grade-point-average, attendance, clinical skills, professionalism, availability of externship sites, and other factors.

Objective of the Phlebotomy Program

The objective of the Phlebotomy program at MTI is to train students for phlebotomy careers in medical labs around the country. MTI College’s phlebotomy courses are designed to teach clinical lab work, terminology and anatomy as it pertains to phlebotomy. Students completing the course will also understand all of the procedures and protocols of working in a medical laboratory.

Phlebotomy Training Requirements

California state law requires that all students enrolled in the phlebotomist program complete a 40-hour laboratory externship along with the classroom courses. This externship is unpaid, but is at no additional cost. The externship program is coordinated by MTI College with Sacramento area medical laboratories, clinics or hospitals. This additional training ensures that students understand the practical implications of their coursework.

Phlebotomy Certification

The State of California Department of Health Services has fully approved the phlebotomy technician program at MTI. Upon completion of the program and the required externship, students are allowed to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam, also known as the CPT1. Students have the option of enrolling in the phlebotomy program alone or as an extension of the MTI medical assisting program.

Phlebotomy-only Enrollment

The following enrollment requirements apply only to students who enroll in the Phlebotomy Program directly.
