Phlebotomy Program

- The Phlebotomy Program is approved by American Medical Technologists
and the National Center for Competency Testing which allows
students to take the Registered Phlebotomy Technician
(RPT) or National Certified Phlebotomy Technician
(NCPT). Once a student has passed either exam they
are eligible to apply for state licensure as a phlebotomist
(CPT1). Both exams are available to be taken on campus through
the Learning Resource Center.
Phlebotomy Program Objective
The objective of the Phlebotomy Program is to prepare students
for employment in a laboratory setting. Phlebotomy students will
learn the terminology and anatomy associated with phlebotomy as
well as the proper protocols and procedures used in a laboratory
environment. In order to meet the program’s graduation requirements,
phlebotomy students must complete a 40-hour unpaid laboratory externship
in addition to the published course requirements.
Description
Phlebotomy technicians perform a variety of duties such as, drawing
blood from a patient’s finger, heel, or vein, processing of
specimens, and clerical duties, on a variety of patients. Working
environments can include private office, large laboratories, hospitals,
and blood banks.
Certification
The Phlebotomy Program at MTI College is approved by the State
of California Department of Health Services (DHS). Students
will be eligible to take the “Certified Phlebotomist Technician
1” (CPT1) exam upon completion of the program and externship.
Students may enroll in the Phlebotomy Program directly or in conjunction
with MTI's Medical Assistant Program.
The following enrollment requirements apply only to students who
enroll in the Phlebotomy Program directly.
