Phlebotomy Program
In addition to the following Phlebotomy certification program, MTI also offers a Billing and Coding Specialist certificate program and a Medical Assisting diploma program.
The Phlebotomy Program is approved by American Medical Technologists and the National Center for Competency Testing which allows students to take the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) or National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT). Once a student has passed either exam they are eligible to apply for state licensure as a phlebotomist (CPT1). Both exams are available to be taken on campus through the Learning Resource Center.
Phlebotomy Technician Program Objective
The objective of the phlebotomy courses at our Sacramento campus is to prepare students for Sacramento phlebotomy careers in a laboratory setting. Through their medical assisting training, phlebotomy courses will teach students the terminology used and anatomy associated with phlebotomy careers. At MTI College, the educational objectives will also help students to understand and be able to adhere to the proper protocols and procedures used in a laboratory environment.
Phlebotomy Training Requirements
In order to meet the Sacramento phlebotomy technician program's graduation requirements, phlebotomy training students must complete, at a minimum, a 40-hour unpaid laboratory externship in addition to the published phlebotomy technician course requirements. At no additional cost to the student, MTI College coordinates phlebotomy externships in the greater Sacramento area for qualified graduates. This additional hands-on phlebotomy training helps students to have a well-rounded phlebotomy education in preparation for their phlebotomy technician careers.
Phlebotomy Career Description
Phlebotomy technicians perform a variety of duties such as drawing blood from a patient's finger, heel, or vein, processing of specimens, and clerical duties, on a variety of patients. Working environments can include private office, large laboratories, hospitals, and blood banks.
