- The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Program is approved
by the National Center for Competency Testing and the American
Medical Technologists which allows students to take the National
Certified Insurance and Coding Specialist (NCICS),
National Certified Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA)
or the Certified Medical Office Specialist Exam (CMAS).
All three exams are available to be taken on campus through
the Learning Resource Center upon successful completion of the
program.
Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Program Objective:
The
objective of the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist program is
to prepare students for employment in healthcare office settings,
with an emphasis on insurance billing, coding, medical records,
and administrative front office responsibilities. Students will
become proficient in using Medisoft software, ICD-9 and CPT books,
as well as the Microsoft Office Suite products.
Description:
Medical billing and coding specialists and medical front office
staff play a vital role in the healthcare industry. The duties performed
include medical insurance billing and coding, completing and submitting
medical insurance forms, creating and maintaining medical charts,
preparing reports and correspondence, scheduling appointments, and
greeting patients. Working environments include private medical
offices, hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies.

Employment Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in health
services industries will spur faster-than-average employment of
billing and coding specialists, medical secretaries and office
specialists until 2014.
